Perhaps the best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No. 4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930’s. “These’s peace in a Larranaga, there’s calm in Henry Clay” reads the first half of the fifth couplet in The Betrothed, an 1890 poem by the celebrated English writer Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). From this high point, the brand has shrunk to just handmade cigars. It was created in 1834 by Ignacio Larranaga, likely making it the oldest continuously-produced Havana brand still in existence.

In Don Quixote, the famous 17th Century Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, it was Sancho Panza who served the errant knight as his faithful squire.
