Our Apsley and Arundel and cigar humidors are made from wood, as it provides a suitable environment for storing cigars. Here is a general process of how our cigar humidors are made:
Material selection: At the heart of our range of desktop humidors lies a meticulous combination of materials. Starting with a sturdy plywood base adorned with a veneer, we ensure both durability and elegance. However, what truly sets our humidors apart is the interior lining of Spanish cedar. Despite its misleading name, Spanish cedar is a remarkable wood from the Meliaceae family, sharing qualities with the esteemed mahogany. Given mahogany’s proven excellence as a humidor wood, it comes as no surprise that Spanish cedar is widely chosen for the interiors of our humidors. As we move forward in the creation process, we select a range of wood veneers, including maple, makah burl, and burl walnut.
Design and measurement: The desired size and design of the humidor are determined. This includes selecting the shape, number of compartments, and any additional features such as platforms, drawers, or humidification systems.
Woodworking: The plywood and veneer is then cut and shaped according to the design. The pieces are typically joined together using woodworking techniques such as dovetail joints or mitre joints.
Lining and sealing: The interior of the humidor is lined with Spanish cedar, which helps regulate humidity and adds to the overall aroma and flavour of the cigars. The cedar lining is carefully installed and sealed to ensure a tight and moisture-resistant fit.
Hardware installation: Hinges, handles, and other hardware components are added to the humidor. These components are usually made from metal and are chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal.
Finishing touches: The exterior of the humidor is sanded, stained, and finished with 15 layers of gloss lacquer. This not only enhances the appearance but also helps protect the wood from moisture and other elements.
Humidification system: A humidification system is installed to maintain the ideal humidity level inside the humidor. This can include elements such as a humidifier, hygrometer, and a water reservoir.
Quality control: The finished humidor undergoes a quality control check to ensure that it meets the desired standards. This includes checking for proper sealing, humidity regulation, and overall functionality.
It’s important to note that the process may vary depending on the specific design of the humidor. Skilled craftsmen and attention to detail are key factors in creating our high-quality cigar humidors, which should not be compared with cheaper mass-produced humidor with cheap wood finishes.
