Created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro, it was rolled at the now-legendary El Laguito factory in Havana. Initially reserved exclusively for Cuban diplomats and foreign dignitaries, it became available to the wider market in 1982, instantly achieving iconic status among aficionados worldwide.
The name Cohiba comes from the ancient Taino Indian term used to describe the bunches of tobacco leaves that Christopher Columbus first observed being smoked by the indigenous people of Cuba — the earliest known form of a cigar.
Cohiba cigars are crafted using only the “selection of the selection” from the finest Vegas de Primera plantations in the San Juan y Martínez and San Luis regions of the Vuelta Abajo. The filler leaves — seco, ligero, and the rare medio tiempo — undergo an exclusive third fermentation in wooden barrels, a process unique to Cohiba.
