The Cohiba Esplendidos is the epitome of luxury and craftsmanship within the Habano world. Created in 1966 exclusively for President Fidel Castro, this cigar was originally rolled in the now-legendary El Laguito factory and reserved for diplomats and heads of state. It wasn’t until 1982 that Cohiba became available to the wider market in very limited quantities.
The name Cohiba derives from the ancient Taino Indian word used by Cuba’s earliest inhabitants to describe the bundles of tobacco leaves they smoked — the first known form of what we now call a cigar.
The Esplendidos embodies Cohiba’s signature refinement. Its leaves represent the “selection of selection” — the finest tobacco from five elite Vegas de Primera in the San Juan y Martínez and San Luis regions of Vuelta Abajo. These premium filler leaves — seco, ligero, and the rare medio tiempo — undergo an exclusive third fermentation in wooden barrels, imparting a uniquely smooth, aromatic, and layered complexity unmatched by any other Habano.
