First created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro, Cohiba cigars were originally produced in secrecy at the now-legendary El Laguito factory in Havana. For years, they were reserved exclusively for diplomats and heads of state, before finally becoming available to the public in 1982.

The name Cohiba originates from an ancient Taino Indian term meaning the bunches of tobacco leaves Columbus first witnessed being smoked by the indigenous people of Cuba — the earliest form of the Habano.

Only the finest tobacco leaves — the “selection of the selection” — from Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martínez and San Luis, within the Vuelta Abajo region, are used. The filler leaves (seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo) undergo a unique third fermentation in wooden barrels, a process exclusive to Cohiba, creating unparalleled smoothness, aroma, and complexity.
