Hoyo de Monterrey cigars trace their origins to the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the heart of Cuba’s world-famous Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone. The historic Hoyo de Monterrey plantation—one of Cuba’s great Vegas de Primera—can be accessed through a gate on the town’s main square, proudly inscribed with “Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860”.
The name “Hoyo” means “hole”, referring to the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. Founded by Spanish émigré José Gener in 1865, the brand quickly earned a reputation for producing light, aromatic Cuban cigars of great elegance and complexity.
Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are especially renowned for their celebrated vitolas:
Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona – a legendary size admired for its balance and refinement.
Epicure Series (No.1, No.2, and Epicure Especial) – signature cigars prized for their smooth, approachable flavour.
Le Hoyo Series – offering slender and standard formats with a refined profile.
Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto (2005) – the first Habano of its kind, a short yet thick format (50-ring gauge) ideal for modern smokers.
All Hoyo de Monterrey Cuban cigars are crafted using the Tripa Larga, Totalmente a Mano method—long filler, totally handmade—with select tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region. With their lighter strength and nuanced flavour, they are a favourite choice for aficionados seeking delicate yet flavourful Cuban cigars.
